The food on offer is very affordable, although quality and freshness can come into question. Don't buy blindly, but assess your selections.

Food courts

These offer a more comfortable and diverse alternative to street food. Some examples of food options are Thai, Indian, Malaysian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. Western food options are also available, however, because they're not cooked by Westerners don't expect the cuisine to be exact (especially if you're from the country where the food originates from). Food courts can typically be found within shopping malls or complexes.

Night markets

This kind of market is another great alternative for finding food, especially because you can do some shopping as you move about with your food or decide to sit on a spot and observe what's on offer while soaking in the atmosphere. The best part about night markets is that they're common across Thailand.

Attractions on Offer

Night markets

There are no entrance fees to enter night markets, and because they're common across the country, depending on your location they offer different attractions for visitors. Outside of purchasing items, night markets are a great spot to enjoy and get a feel of Thai life.

Parks

If you find yourself in Bangkok it'd be a crime not to visit one of the many <a website sprawled across the city. This includes temples, ruins, beaches, markets, historical sites and cities. Each of them have plenty for you to see for nothing, and each come with doses of cultural emersion. With all that said, do note that some areas have a foreigner fee where you pay notably higher than visiting locals to enter the space.

Transportation Options

Grab app

The ride app is handy to have on your phone and it comes into great use in any country across Southeast Asia. The best part about Grab is the option to choose between a car or motorcycle ride, where motorcycles are a cheaper option and will allow you to zigzag through potential traffic.

Motorcycles

Alternatively, instead of using an app to find a ride, you can settle for motorcycle taxis alongside the roads. You can spot them by the high visibility jackets the riders have on. A good habit to get into is haggling an agreeable price by leveraging with Grab; at times, if drivers see that Grab offers cheaper transport, they're willing to drop their price.

Songthaews

These are pick-up trucks with attached roofs and they're typically bright in color. They're share-taxis that operate a lot like buses with their designated routes, but the challenge with them is knowing and understanding their route, for you might end up on a side of town you didn't bargain on. However, if you're looking for an experience then jump on.

Buses

There are two distinct ways of using the bus systems on offer in the country. The first is riding within a city and getting on or off at stops, while the second is to use buses to travel between cities. If you're traveling to another city and you're not pressed on time, using the bus services is an excellent cost-saver.

Metered taxis

Depending on the distance, meter taxis are a viable option. The thing to remember is to ask the driver to turn on the meter when driving otherwise they can swindle you. All you have to do is say ‘meter' before getting in the vehicle. This notifies the driver that they should charge by the meter rate as opposed to their own judgment and discretion, and they'll either accept or decline.

Renting

Depending on the location, <a website a scooter can be a convenient and inexpensive option. With that said, it's usually the tourist areas that have the best prices and rental policies due to the regular stream of customers.

Souvenirs and Gifts

Night markets

Perhaps you're beginning to see a trend here … yes, night markets are very good spots to take care of a variety of needs, with souvenirs and gifts being one of them. Depending on the market selected you can find clothing, electronics, toys and other novelties on sale.

20 Baht stores

A little on the penny-pinching side, but a loved one back home may appreciate the novelty of getting something they couldn't otherwise access, even if it is cheap. There are 20 Baht stores, 50 Baht stores, and even 100 Baht stores; they're the equivalents of a dollar store and what they all have in common is that you can find cut prices of almost anything in these.

Miscellaneous

Government hospitals

In case of emergencies government hospitals are an option. The catch, though, is that you may spend an entire day at the emergency center as you go through the numerous protocols to see a doctor and the English proficiency will be sourly lacking. However, at the end of the day, the medical service will be extremely affordable.

20 Baht stores

If you need something quickly and cheaply, and aren't necessarily ready to pay the associated price, these stores can save you some cash. A few weeks later, he shared a photo of a protester carrying a placard saying "The country where you speak the truth and you go to jail."

His superiors in the Royal Thai Army warned him to stop.
But he had already made up his mind to quit and left the army in October.

"When the protests escalated, orders to prohibit social media posts came in more often," Ekkachai, 33, told Reuters in an interview. "They want to nip it in the bud, but they can't."

Social media is exposing discontent among some soldiers, police and civil servants after months of protests against Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and the monarchy of King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Although Thai soldiers have occasionally expressed sympathy for protesters in past bouts of political unrest, the rapid expansion of social media is making it difficult to contain.

Reuters reviewed dozens of social media posts and messages on chat groups used by soldiers and police and found many expressing sympathy with protesters and anger or [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-thai-lan-bangkok-pattaya-5-ngay.html tour thái lan giá rẻ] unease over the way those who oppose the government are being treated.

Some posted about their loyalty to Thailand's institutions.

It is impossible to establish how far disaffection reaches based on social media activity. But the posts have attracted the attention of authorities.

"If you are posting things that are creating misunderstanding and provocation that would create instability, that is inappropriate," said Colonel Sirijan Ngathong, the army's deputy spokeswoman, adding that commanding officers were reviewing the social media activity of soldiers to prevent breaches of army rules.

She did not respond to requests for comment on the case involving Ekkachai or whether surveillance had increased since protests escalated in July.

Some posts appeared on the viral video-sharing app TikTok.

One TikTok video, now removed, showed a soldier giving the three-fingered salute, a gesture of resistance featured in "The Hunger Games" film that Thailand´s student-led, anti-government protest [http://www.51ideas.com/?s=movement movement] adopted. "Keep up the struggle, Thai brothers and sisters," said the caption.

The video´s author told Reuters that he is a serving professional soldier but asked that his name not be used.

Some sections of the army have intensified their clampdown. A message posted by a coordinator in a private chat group used by officers in one artillery regiment, reviewed by Reuters, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-thai-lan-bangkok-pattaya-5-ngay.html tour thái lan giá rẻ] prohibited soldiers from joining protests or giving any political opinions on social media.

"After finding political expressions that were not suitable, commanders are asked to consider and rectify accordingly and to explain the political situation correctly to troops," the message said.

The army did not respond to a request for comment on the message.

It is unclear if disaffection will affect the protests or the way the government responds to them.

"While there is some disaffection within the armed forces, grumblings do not remain significant enough to constitute a significant faction," said Paul Chambers, a politics expert at Naresuan University in northern Thailand.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri declined to comment on disaffection among members of the security forces or civil service, saying only that the country should be focused on dialogue between those with different views.

PROTESTS SWELL

Tens of thousands of people have protested in the streets of Thailand since July, calling for a new constitution and the removal of Prayuth, who led a military coup in 2014.

Protesters have also demanded curbs on the powers of the king, until recently a taboo subject in a country where criticism of the monarchy is a crime.

The army plays a pivotal role in Thailand, which has been ruled by serving or former military officers for more than two-thirds of the time since the end of absolute monarchy in 1932.

Thailand´s army has seized power 13 times since then and has on several occasions been involved in bloody crackdowns on protesters including in 1973, 1976, 1992 and 2010.

Although many of the coups have had the broad support of the armed forces, cracks in the military have been exposed in the past.
During a bloody 2010 crackdown on red-shirted anti-government protesters in Bangkok, some green-uniformed soldiers openly sympathized with the demonstrators, tipping off the group´s leaders ahead of a planned army operation. They were dubbed "watermelons" - green on the outside with red sympathies on the inside.

That same year, rogue general Khattiya Sawasdipol - known as "Seh Daeng" or "Commander Red" - was assassinated after he came out in support of anti-government protesters, showing that displays of disloyalty in the Thai military can be dangerous.

"Security forces, especially those who have to confront the protesters, are in a stressful position," said Kiranee Tammapiban-udom of government consultancy Maverick Consulting Group.

They have to follow orders but at the same time are branded "servants of tyranny" by protesters, she said.

One protest leader, Tattep Ruangprapaikitseree, said he encouraged security forces to disobey orders. "Turn your backs to your commanders, the regime will collapse," he told Reuters.

Another soldier who had also posted on social media said he was looking to defuse tension rather than escalate it.

"Maybe it's time for the older generation to listen to the young," he said. "Asking Prayuth to quit and for changes to the constitution is not abolishing the monarchy."

DRESS CODE: YELLOW

Some Thai police and civil servants are also questioning their roles.

Many have been ordered to join official displays of loyalty to the crown, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-thai-lan-bangkok-pattaya-5-ngay.html tua du lịch thái lan] such as lining royal motorcade routes wearing yellow shirts - the king's colour.

Police Colonel Kissana Phathanacharoen told Reuters such activities are part of police duty and that law enforcement was politically neutral.

"Is this police work?" queried one police officer in an internal chat group, responding to a superior officer´s request in the group for participants to join a royal event.

The superior officer responded in the chat group that he was passing on orders and that questions should be addressed to more senior levels.

One document seen by Reuters, sent by the Bangkok Metropolitan Police to the Office of Police Strategy, a national body, requested "250 female police officers and 1,950 male along the route of the royal motorcade" for a funeral on Oct.

29 in Bangkok.

"Dress code: yellow shirt with yellow collar.
id="mod_48410766">
It is no secret that Bangkok and Thailand as a whole is bursting with stunning temples in different forms.
One of the most famous and most visited temples in Bangkok is the magnificent Wat Arun. When searching online about Thailand's popular tourist spots, it was almost always a part of the top 10 results. Unlike my previous solo tours around Bangkok, my most recent one was with the husband and there never would have been a more perfect time.

If you're planning to include Wat Arun in your next Thailand itinerary, read all about our touring experience so you will know what to expect.

How to Go to Wat Arun
Wat Arun is located along the Chao Phraya River. It can be reached by taking a ferry boat across the river from Tha Tien Pier near Wat Pho and Grand Palace.

One of the easiest route is to travel via BTS Skytrain Silom Line from your location to BTS Saphan Taksin Station. You can then take a ferry to Tha Tien Pier and wait for a smaller ferry to take you across.

"lat":13.743054000000001,"lng":100.487106,"zoom":16,"mapType":"ROADMAP","markers":[],"moduleId":"48411886"

We took a bus from BTS Un Not Station to the bus station nearest the Grand Palace, taking our time to check out the historical sections of the palace walls because we wanted to visit Wat Arun in the late afternoon. From the Grand Palace, we walked around eight minutes passing by Wat Pho and a small market until we reached Tha Tien Port.
We tried to check out some of the merchandise being sold in the market but decided to fall in line before the ferry even arrived because of the tourist influx. Prepare 3 to 5 Baht for the ferry ride to take your across.

The Ordination Hall
Our ferry ride itself was uneventful. As expected, heaps of tourists were already taking photos of the wat from different angles.
The sight of the wat basking in the afternoon sun was classically charming. I can't help but be excited to finally see it in real life. Expect hundreds of tourists to join your sightseeing as the site is one of the most visited wats. According to research from Sciencedirect, the wat is visited by 5 million tourists per year.

As we alighted the ferry, we walked through a series of wood planks then several steps of stairs leading to a medium-sized gate, tourists filling the way in both directions.

Tourists at Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn in Bangkok, Thailand

As soon as we entered the exterior gate, we were welcomed by a much smaller decorated temple surrounded by a deliberately designed flora. It was the Ordination Hall with two temple guardian figures in front.
Definitely an eye candy, even the space surrounding Wat Arun was definitely well taken care of and picture-perfect.

Ordination Hall at Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn in Bangkok, Thailand

The Wat Arun Fees and Must Haves
After taking tons of pictures, we followed the crowd and slowly moved towards the center where Wat Arun is situated surrounded by its own walls and gates.
Visitors who were done with their [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-thai-lan-bangkok-pattaya-5-ngay.html tour đi thái lan] were seen lounging in the grassy area outside of the inner walls. The temple was located at first in grounds of the Royal Palace until it was moved by Rama I to the other side of the river and went through a series of restoration under several rulers from early 1800's up to the most recent undertaken from 2013 up to 2017.

Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn in Bangkok, Thailand

Exploring Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn
The temple consists of the central tower and surrounded by four smaller ones on its corners. We toured in the late afternoon but it was still difficult to take some decent photos without some strangers being captured in it although some were polite enough to stop before they get included in the frame.

The center tower of Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn in Bangkok, Thailand

The main tower was decorated with bits of porcelain and seashells and the bottom sections were designed with animals and ancient Chinese [http://www.wordreference.com/definition/soldier%20statues soldier statues]. There were center stairs leading up the main tower but the gates were closed after a few levels and the guards do not allow tourists on the other side of the enclosures.

There were also gated Buddha statues on some sections of the tower.

The towers of Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn in Bangkok, Thailand

We took as many photos and explored every bit of crevice of the public section of the wat. At around 15 minutes to six in the evening, the guards started leading the tourists out as the temple is about to close its internal enclosures at exactly six.

Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn in Bangkok, Thailand

I was excited to see the temple in all its lighted glory. We waited at the grassy area at the front of the wat with the other tourists. The place was relaxing, the grounds landscaped and filled with well-kept flower beds.
The country's flags and a huge photo of King Maha Vajiralongkorn were also positioned at the front to welcome all visitors. I was enjoying the flower beds when the husband made me realize the temple lights were already lit up. I took my time and enjoyed a few more minutes taking in all its beauty.

Wat Arun was gorgeous!

As we sailed back to the other side, I snapped a few more photos hoping I would be able to capture its grandeur even just a tiny bit. I was only using my phone so we all know how that turned out.
As darkness slowly tried to swallow and engulf its wholeness, Wat Arun became even more stunning and highlighted with the night sky as its backdrop. And with that magnificent view, we closed our Wat Arun adventure.

Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn in Bangkok, Thailand

© 2019 Sheila Navio-Pornan

Relat[ ][[ ][ ]by Peter Dickinson13

[ ][ ]by Paul Richard Kuehn11

Comments
[ ] or [ ] and post using a HubPages Network account.
0 of 8192 characters used[# Post Comment]No HTML is allowed in comments, but URLs will be hyperlinked.

Comments are not for promoting your articles or other sites.
sendingAUTHORSheila Navio-Pornan
12 months ago from Manila, Philippines
Definitely one of the nicest "wats" to spend your late afternoon in Bangkok.

Thanks, Liz!

[ ]Liz Westwood
12 months ago from UK
This looks like a very interesting place to visit.

It's a very well-illustrated article.
We expect this somewhat foreshadows the Frontier whenever Nissan finally decides to show it, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-thai-lan-bangkok-pattaya-5-ngay.html tour đi thái lan] even if this Pro-4X trim doesn't make it to America. Do keep in mind the truck we're getting will be all new, but some of this style will transfer over, more than likely.
This truck shown is specifically for Thailand, and Nissan was light on specifics, but the pickup wears a new design -- and a much-needed one at that. The current Frontier's been around for years now. The design picks up some familiar cues we've seen across the automaker's lineup in the headlights, the new running light signature and a bigger grille. The rear keeps it pretty traditional, but then again, there's not much you can do to really change up the rear of a truck. Regardless, it looks fresh, especially with the smoked taillights on this Pro-4X trim.

For more like this
Subscribe to the Roadshow newsletter, receive notifications and see related stories on CNET.

Nissan didn't dive into the mechanical specs but we already know the powertrain for [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-thai-lan-bangkok-pattaya-5-ngay.html tour thái lan giá rẻ] the US, because Nissan decided to drop the new engine in the old truck for the [/roadshow/reviews/2020-nissan-frontier-review/ 2020 Frontier] -- Roadshow's Craig Cole said it's quite a peach. It's a [/roadshow/news/2020-nissan-frontier-new-engine/ new 3.8-liter V6] with 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque married to a nine-speed automatic. The days of an inline-four engine and [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-thai-lan-bangkok-pattaya-5-ngay.html tour thái lan giá rẻ] a manual transmission are long gone for the new Frontier. Nissan also highlighted a strengthened rear axle, increased payload capacity and a larger bed. A new steering rack is supposed to make the truck more maneuverable as well. We'll have to wait for finer details until [http://www.exeideas.com/?s=Nissan%27s%20ready Nissan's ready] to share more.

Technology is big here, though. Nissan highlighted a suite of active safety technology and driver-assist systems such as a surround-view monitor and automatic emergency braking. In the US, definitely expect these features, plus more, perhaps. The interior, overall, still looks a tad dated, and it's definitely not reflective of what we'll see in the US.

Consider this a nice preview of where we're headed. We hope to receive more details and a Frontier debut in the very near future.
