[/news/china/index.html China] has dubbed US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi 'hypocritical', 'sinister' and 'despicable' after she met with a politician from Hong Kong known as the city's 'father of democracy'.
'My full support and admiration goes to those who have taken to the streets week after week in non-violent protest to fight for democracy and the rule of law in HongKong,' Pelosi wrote on Twitter yesterday while sharing a picture of her receiving leading activists.

China's Foreign Ministry lashed out at Pelosi today, accusing her of 'sheltering and indulging violence' as well as 'fanning the flames'.
Hua Chunying, a spokesperson from the Ministry, said at a daily press briefing: 'Pelosi confounds black and white, confuses right and wrong, beautifies criminal and violent acts by calling them non-violent protests, and cheers for anti-China offenders who brought chaos to Hong Kong.
'Her behaviour shows hypocrisy and sinister plans, and is despicable and shocking.'
Hua continued: 'It is because of the sheltering, indulgence and instigation from people like Pelosi, those violent criminals think they have patrons and show no fear.'
Hua cited a letter which she said was submitted to US senators by an American living in Hong Kong to show how US lawmakers have 'twisted the truth'.
Martin Lee Chu-ming, 81, nicknamed as 'the father of democracy' in Hong Kong, is a founder of the Democratic Party and served on the government's Basic Law drafting committee in 1985
Pelosi also met with Jimmy Lai Chee-Ying, a media tycoon critical of Beijing's interference.

The writer, unnamed, accused the West of fabricating lies about the situation, cửu trại câu said Hua.
The alleged letter was also reported by China Plus, a news site under state-run China Radio International.
It claimed that the bias from the West was rooted in its hope 'to curtail the continued emergence of China on the world stage, and the fear of Chinese hegemony in the region'.
It also claimed that Western politicians and media were trying to look at Hong Kong's unrest from the view of those who 'wish to destroy the city, and present the world a facade of half-truths'.
Hua called the protests 'street violence and crimes through and through'.
The spokesperson urged Pelosi to stop meddling in Hong Kong matters and stop supporting any plots of separating Hong Kong from China.
'I would like to warn Pelosi and her like: no matter how your eyes are covered by prejudice and how your hearts are filled by evil, Hong Kong is China's Hong Kong,' Hua said.

Both Lee and Lai have provoked the ire of China for their roles in the ongoing anti-government demonstrations.
Beijing accuses them of soliciting foreign interference and labels them 'hanjians', a derogatory term for a race traitor to the Han Chinese.
Lee, nicknamed as 'the father of democracy' in Hong Kong, is a founder of the Democratic Party and served on the government's Basic Law drafting committee in 1985.

He was later expelled and banned from China for his support of the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy movement.
Lee is also one of the most senior barristers in the city.
Lai is the founder of Hong Kong media giant Next Digital and the Apple Daily newspaper, which is known for its pro-democracy stance and colour reporting.
During a recent interview with CBS's programme '60 minutes', Lai said the Hong Kong protesters were fighting 'the first battle of the new cold war' between Beijing and Washington.

Pelosi's meeting with Lee and Lai came just a week after China threatened 'effective retaliation' against the US for a human rights bill it drafted in support of Hong Kong protests.
The bill, called the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, was passed by unanimous vote at the US House of Representatives.
Applauding the passage of the bill, the House speaker Nancy Pelosi accused China of breaking its promise of granting Hong Kong 'a high degree of autonomy'.
She criticised those who chose to side with Beijing because of economic gains.
She said on the House Floor: 'Again, to those who want to take the repressive government's side in this discussion, I say to you, what does it profit a person if he gains the whole world and suffers the loss of his soul?
'And we do not want to lose the soul of our country for commercial interests, whatever those commercial interests may be.'
Beijing has repeatedly condemned Pelosi, accusing her of having 'ulterior political motives' due to her vocal backing for the protesters.
